Step one and two
when you are diagnosed with
an illness or face a big problem
If you are a Curandera, a shaman, healer or practitioner; and you are diagnosed with an illness or have a big problem like a divorce, you have to approach it differently than the rest of the community (AKA non-practitioners).
Illnesses and problems are tests and pieces of training in the life of a practitioner. Once we conquer them, then somehow we start having clients with those problems or illnesses. We experienced this situation to help us develop understanding, compassion, and skills to heal and help our clients.
What is the step one? How can we approach it from a practitioner’s side?
Everything starts with energy. Thoughts are energy. The first thing to do is to look into the subconscious mind to discover the cause or thought that is creating this sickness or problem. This is STEP ONE.
As practitioners, it is very difficult to look inside our own subconscious mind. It is also difficult, if not impossible, to heal ourselves. That is why we need a community of practitioners or close friends that are practitioners. Our ego and fears don’t allow us to “see” our subconscious mind. Somebody else has to do that for us.
If we cannot get a hold on our practitioner friends and if our ego is on the way, how can we get subconscious mind information? This is the trick that my mom taught me when I was a kid. I still use it. Not only I use it for me, but I also use it with family, friends, and clients.
There is a book that is a dictionary of illnesses. It is so little than you can carry it in your purse or medicine bag. I have one in Spanish and one in English. The translations are slightly different, both books complement each other. I use it so much that I have it also at home, in the car and also it is my preferred present for Christmas, birthdays or special occasions.
How does the book work? Once you find the illness in the book, you will also find information about the mental cause or thoughts that are producing it. And next to the mental cause you’ll find some positive affirmations to counteract the negative thoughts. That is the step one….finding the mental cause.
You have to have an open heart and set your ego aside. Sometimes when we read a cause for an illness, the first thing we say to ourselves is…..“The book is wrong”…. Let me tell you that in my own experience and with my clients, the book hasn’t been wrong.
This is the way I discovered how effective this book can be. In my twenties, I had a scuba diving shop in the Mexican Caribbean. I taught and guided scuba divers. Once a month when I had my “moon time” (Native American for the period), I experienced terrible cramps, headaches, and weakness. No matter how bad I felt I needed to go out into the ocean and dive.
One day, when I was visiting my mother, I was experiencing a terrible moon time. I told my mom and she took out the book and explained how to use it. I had nothing to lose, anyway I was miserable. This is what the book says about menstrual problems:
“Rejection of one’s femininity.
Guilt, fear.
Believe that genitals are sinful or dirty”

These are the positive affirmations that the book recommends:

“I accept my full power as a woman
and accept all my bodily processes
as normal and natural.
I love and approve myself”

Wow…. Yes, I was able to relate to that! I hated being a woman and having cramps and moon times. It didn’t click the guilt, fear, and genitals stuff, but at least the first part was exactly how I felt.

I had the cause and I had the positive affirmation…..then what?
My mom said: “Now you have to change the negative thought in your subconscious mind and implant the positive thought”.
Yeah right! Sounds great but how do I do that? Then another big chapter of my life opened up…… “Affirmations”… the greatest tool to change from the inside out. Affirmations are staples in my healing practice since then.
I won’t explain the process of using affirmations in this writing, but for now, I can tell you a simple way to use them. This is what I did:
After my mom wrote the positive affirmations in a paper for me, I went back home. My town, Tulum, was two hours from my mom’s house. All the way home I repeated the affirmations. I repeated them the next day. And the following day as well, with no noticeable change. I keep repeating them until one day something clicked inside me. I was no longer repeating the affirmations I was “feeling them”. I was “experiencing them”. I cannot say that they worked because by then my moon time was over.
Next month came. When I had my moon time and I felt the cramps, I ran to my purse where I left the paper with the affirmations. I sat on the floor, took the meditation posture, closed my eyes, took a big deep breath and repeated the affirmations slowly until I could feel them …..healed! ….. done!
Since then, when I have moon times, I don’t experience discomfort. Sometimes I get little cramps and the only thing that I need to do is go to my medicine bag, take out the book and repeat the affirmations.
Yes, you guessed it!….STEP TWO is working with affirmations.
A simple way to use the affirmations is just to repeat them until you become one with them. You can also write them down, so you have them there, in front of you all the time. You can hang the affirmation in a paper in your car, bathroom, computer, etc.
Before I give you the name and author of the book, I just want to warn you about not judging people. Let me explain. Once you have the book you will have the ability to discover the mental cause of the sicknesses of your friends and family. You may be tempted to tell about their personal issues and sometimes this doesn’t have a happy outcome.
We have used this little book so much, that when somebody comes and says what illness he or she is experiencing, we know the mental causes and therefore we kind of discover their private life…. my advice: be respectful. It is better to give them a book than to tell them their negative thoughts about themselves. Not everyone is ready to hear them.
Among us, family and close friends, we don’t dare to say how we feel when we are getting sick because coming from a Mexican family, with Mexican ways, everyone starts picking on you.
The name of this wonderful book is “Heal your body” by Louise L. Hay. Among all the books that she has written, this is still my favorite. If you are going to buy just one of her books, this is the one that I will recommend.
Also at the end of the book, it has a chart about back problems explained vertebrae by vertebrae. I think this book is just awesome (Californian word for great).
You can use it in your professional practice too. I have a Native American Medicine friend that has no ability to “read” or “see” the client’s problems. But he is extremely good in taking away illnesses. So what he does is the following: The client tells him the problems, and then the client lies down and closes his or her eyes. My friend looks in the book for information. Then talks to the client about what the book says. They discuss a little about it and then the healing starts. He removes the illness. After everything is done he gives the client a list of affirmations to work on a book.
We tease him about cheating the client, but in reality, he can work by himself without the help of a “seer” or a “medical intuitive” person. As my teacher always says: “What matters is the end result”. And the end result is a healed person.
